If someone who walks is with me when I’m in the wheelchair, even in my own house, the repairman or dryer vent cleaner or air conditioner guy, whatever, will always talk to the walking person. And I don’t particularly see this as disrespect towards me as much as it is illogical to assume that the visibly stronger one is the most capable of understanding and communicating. The logical part of me knows there are a lot of customers to serve, and it’s a dog-eat-dog business world anyway with little time and room for respect. But the sensitive side of me wonders if he/she thinks a lowly wheelchair person could not possibly own a house or be smart enough to understand maintenance issues just because of the wheelchair. Oh well. I guess it only bothers me because it’s so illogical. Why do I care about this person I’ll never see again? I am simply venting a frustration. But I wish there was a solution to the problem. Probably it is in me not being so sensitive about it.
